OAKLAND, Calif. -- With a fabulous finish to the preseason, rookie Derek Carr created a big question for the Oakland Raiders heading into the regular season. Carr threw three touchdown passes to make a case he should be Oaklands starting quarterback as the Raiders beat the Seattle Seahawks 41-31 on Thursday night. Carr was almost perfect in the start in place of Matt Schaub, completing 11 of 13 passes for 143 yards and led Oakland (2-2) to four touchdowns in four drives. "Lets not burry our head in the sand," coach Dennis Allen said. "But I havent changed anything. I think were in good shape where were at with all of our quarterbacks and I feel good about being in the position were in." Schaub was anointed the starter after being acquired in an off-season trade from Houston. Coach Dennis Allen hasnt deviated from that plan even as Schaub struggled in the preseason before resting this game with a sore throwing elbow. Now the question will be if Carrs strong performance that included one touchdown drive against Seattles first-team defence or Schaubs health will be enough to change that plan before the opener against the New York Jets on Sept. 7. "Thats up for coach Allen to talk about," Carr said. "My job is to come in and compete my tail off and help this team win." The Seahawks (2-2) have no questions about their starting quarterback. Russell Wilson made the most of a brief cameo, completing three passes for 77 yards, including a 25-yard touchdown pass to Luke Willson on a four-play drive to open the game. "When I look back at this preseason the thing that jumps out at me is what our offence was able to do when the first group was in there," coach Pete Carroll said. "Russell had a phenomenal preseason statistically in every way. That group looks ready to play." The bigger question for the Super Bowl champions coming into this game was whether former Raiders quarterback Terrelle Pryor could show enough to earn a spot on the roster as a third quarterback. Pryor, booed by his former fans, played his best game of the preseason, going 11 for 17 for 134 yards and a 33-yard touchdown pass to Phil Bates. He also ran for 12 yards on four carries. DeShawn Shead also scored on a 55-yard interception return on a pass thrown by Matt McGloin. But this night was all about Carr, who said he was "less rookie" than he was two weeks ago with the starting offence when he yelled out the play in the huddle so loud that his teammates were afraid the defence could hear the call. The second-round pick out of Fresno State made the most of the starting assignment. He completed five passes on the opening drive, including a third-down conversion to Denarius Moore, who was covered by All-Pro Richard Sherman. Latavius Murray capped the drive with a 5-yard TD run. "I was really excited that they played," Carr said of Seattles starting defence. "You obviously want to play against the best. They have the ring to prove it. Thats what were chasing." Carr was just getting started, leading back-to-back one-play touchdown drives following big special teams plays. After a fumbled kickoff by Bryan Walters, Carr threw a 36-yard TD pass to Moore on the following play to give the Raiders a 14-7 lead. TJ Carries 45-yard punt return set up Oaklands next drive at the Seattle 20. On the next play, Carr threw a TD pass to Mychal Rivera, who made a great adjustment on a pass that was deflected by Malcolm Smith. Carr ended his night with an eight-play touchdown drive, capping it with a perfectly placed back-shoulder 11-yard throw to Moore. That gave Oakland a 28-7 lead and sent the crowd into a frenzy rarely seen in the preseason. That ended Carrs night and started what could be more than a week of questions about the opening day starter. "The great thing is we have three guys who could start at quarterback for us," Allen said. "Im very happy with where were at with the quarterback room. The biggest thing is to see where Matt is when he comes in Monday." NOTES: Walters had five kick returns for 137 yards, two punt returns for 13 yards and three catches for 47 yards as he tries to earn a spot on Seattles roster. ... Undrafted rookie George Atkinson III had eight carries for 63 yards for Oakland. ... McGloin threw a TD pass to Brice Butler, the fourth time the two had connected on a scoring play this preseason. Mike Breys Irish had an 11-game win streak halted last weekend, as they dropped a 62-56 decision to now second-ranked Virginia at Purcell Pavilion. The loss dropped Notre Dame to a still impressive 15-2 on the season, including a 3-1 mark in the ACC. Brian Gregorys Yellow Jackets have had an up and down season thus far. The team is 9-6 overall, but is still in search of its first conference win of the year, falling to 0-3 with Saturdays 76-69 loss at Wake Forest. Georgia Tech has now lost three straight games and four of its last five overall. Techs streak began with an 83-76 2OT loss at Notre Dame on Jan. 3. The Irish are seeking the regular-season sweep in this contest and now trail the all- time series with the Yellow Jackets by a 7-4 count. The usually explosive Irish were done in by the stingy Virginia Cavaliers last weekend, as Notre Dame was held to season-lows of 56 points and .339 shooting efficiency. While most of the roster struggled against Virginia, Pat Connaughton had a strong outing, posting 21 points and eight rebounds. Demetrius Jackson and V.J. Beachem each chipped in 12 points, but leading scorer Jerian Grant had a rough outing, going just 2-of-8 from the field and finishing with a mere six points. Although the Cavaliers smothered the Irish, it wasnt an anomaly as Virginia has done that to everyone this season. Despite the rather poor performance, Notre Dame is still regarded as one of the top offensive squads in the nation.dddddddddddd The team leads the nation in field-goal percentage (..535), ranks fifth in scoring margin (+20.9) and second in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.66). Grant is a big part of that. The teams top playmaker, Grant is averaging 16.6 points, 3.9 assists and 6.3 rebounds per game. There is plenty of scoring depth behind him, as Zach Auguste (14.3 ppg), Connaughton (14.3 ppg) and Jackson (14.1 ppg) all have a knack for filling up the basket. Georgia Tech has certainly been competitive in conference play even if there are no wins to show for it. The Yellow Jackets took Notre Dame to two overtime sessions, lost to Syracuse by a single point (46-45) and dropped a seven-point decision on the road to Wake Forest. The Demon Deacons owned large advantages in rebounding (41-29) and free-throw scoring (19-8), two crucial facets of the game last time out. Still, four Yellow Jackets notched double digits in the loss in Winston-Salem, led by junior swingman Marcus Georges-Hunts 16 points. Senior center Demarco Cox poured in 14 points, while sophomore forward Quinton Stephens and junior forward Charles Mitchell finished with 13 and 12 points, respectively. The Yellow Jackets are fueled by solid defensive play this season, holding foes to just 63.7 ppg, while owning an impressive +9.4 rebounding margin. Offensively, there arent any game-changers on the roster. Georges-Hunt paces the team with 13.3 ppg, despite shooting a mere .406 from the field. Mitchell is a much more efficient .544 shooter, and averages 11.1 points and team-best 7.8 rebounds per game. Cox (9.1 ppg, 6.1 rpg) provides serviceable depth in the frontcourt. ' ' '
