ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- The Denver Broncos began the season without strongside linebacker Von Miller, and theyll end it without him, too. Miller is done for the year after tests Monday revealed a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, which he injured in the first quarter of Denvers 37-13 win at Houston over the weekend. "Its definitely going to be a blow," executive vice-president John Elway said on his weekly podcast on the teams website. "But I think that weve done a good job of handling adversity throughout the year. This is another bump in the road for us." The Broncos (12-3) have hit so many potholes this season its a wonder theyre not broken down on the side of the Super Bowl Expressway. Instead, they can wrap up the AFCs top seed with a win at Oakland (4-11) on Sunday. Millers injury ended a rough third season for the Broncos star, which began with a six-game drug suspension and included just five sacks and 33 tackles in 10 games. With 30 sacks in his first two NFL seasons, Miller won the NFLs Defensive Rookie of the Year award in 2011 and was runner-up for the leagues Defensive Player of the Year honour last season. He set a team record in 2012 with 18 1/2 sacks to go with 28 tackles for loss and six forced fumbles. In the off-season, Elway called Miller the best football player on the planet. But Miller ran afoul of the NFLs drug program, was suspended for the first month and a half of the season and never really returned to form in 2013. Miller worked out at the teams Dove Valley complex during his banishment, and he bulked up to 270 pounds -- 24 pounds more than when he was selected second overall in the 2011 draft out of Texas A&M. Miller was rusty upon his return. Although his bulkier body enhanced his bull rush, it seemed to sap some of his athleticism that made him such a special pass rusher. He had moments where hed flash his old form, and last week he spoke about peaking for the playoffs. Although the Broncos went 6-0 during his suspension, that was before they also lost safety Rahim Moore (leg) and linemen Kevin Vickerson (hip) and Derek Wolfe (illness). The Broncos find themselves once again scrambling to make up for the loss of a dynamic playmaker teams had to account for even though he wasnt having his typically disruptive season. "Its like losing a guy like Ryan Clady earlier in the season or (wide receiver Wes) Welker," coach John Fox said via a teleconference with reporters after being sent home Monday because of the flu. "Any time you take away those calibre of players, its a blow." The Broncos will look to replace Miller on the roster with another pass-rusher. Miller was rushing Matt Schaub when he was blocked cleanly by tight end Ryan Griffin. His right knee buckled and he crumpled to the ground. Miller walked off the field and into the locker room with a team doctor and trainer. Because he didnt need to be carted off, there was hope his injury wasnt season-ending and that he might return in the playoffs. "It wasnt anything that was a late hit. It wasnt even a hit," Elway said. "It was just sometimes you tear those ACLs. Its unfortunately a fact of where you step and when you get hit at the same time and that was really what happened to Von. It was really just the ACL, so it should make for a quick recovery." The best case is that hes back for training camp after surgery sometime next month. ACL recoveries generally take six to nine months. The Broncos will once again rely on Nate Irving at strongside linebacker in the base defence and on Shaun Phillips, Robert Ayers and newcomer Jeremy Mincey on passing downs -- along with dialing up creative blitzes. "Hes a special player, no question, one of the best guys Ive seen on the edge in my career," Broncos tight end Julius Thomas said. "What hes able to do on the field, what he can bring, it will be missed, but most importantly we wish him the best, we wish him a fast recovery. "Were going to be there for him and we know hell be there rooting us on." Andrew Heaney Jersey . "Its amazing to do this coming from such a small island, where tennis isnt necessarily recognized as one of the main sports," Puig said. "Im just happy Im able to be here playing tennis not only for myself, but for my country too. It worked. David Krejci scored 1:28 into overtime to lift the surging Bruins to a 3-2 win over the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday. Coming off a tough shootout loss to St. Louis on Thursday, Julien chose to play his top line together. Skating with his usual linemates and only one defenceman, Krejci scored into an empty net after Jarome Iginla broke in alone, forcing goaltender Cam Ward to come way out to try and cut down an angle. Iginla then dropped a pass to Krejci, who fired a wrister over a sprawling Ward for the winner. "We havent had much luck lately in shootouts," Julien said. "I just thought it was important to get a line out there and give us a better chance. It paid off." Reilly Smith and Zdeno Chara also scored for Eastern Conference-leading Boston, which beat the Hurricanes for the second time this week and improved to 7-1-2 in its last 10 games. Iginla knew Krejci had an opening and kept waiting for him to shoot. "I was thinking, Put it in. Put it in," he said. "He showed great patience." Krejci credited Iginla for setting him up so well. "I kind of had an easy job to do," he said. "I just had to put it into a top open net." Bruins backup goaltender Chad Johnson, playing just his fourth game of the season, made 22 saves in place of resting Tuukka Rask. Patrick Dwyer scored a short-handed goal and Andrej Sekera had one on the power play for the Hurricanes, who lost their fourth straight. Ward stopped 35 shots. The Bruins had a 38-24 shot advantage. They won 4-1 in Carolina on Monday night. The Hurricanes felt like they were a bit lucky to get the game to OT after being outplayed for two periods. "We were happy with the way we played in the third, but its a 60 minute game," Dwyer said. "When you get behind on a team like that, its a tough team to get your way back into the game against. We thought we were there and they won it in overtime." Ward didnt feel like Carolina played well enough to earn a victory. "Youve got to be at your best when youre playing a team likee that.dddddddddddd." he said. With the Hurricanes trailing 2-1 and skating short-handed after a bench minor for too many men on the ice, Dwyer collected a loose puck near centre ice, broke in alone and slipped a backhander by Johnsons blocker, tying it with 8:50 to play. Boston, which dominated play for lengthy stretches in the second period, moved ahead 2-1 on Smiths goal at 13:31. Smith collected the rebound in front after Carolina defenceman Tim Gleason blocked Carl Soderbergs shot, he shifted to his backhand and slipped a shot into the net past Wards glove. The Hurricanes were held without a shot on goal for nearly the opening 12 minutes of the second. Eric Staal finally ended the drought when he fired a shot from the left circle that Johnson stopped with a right-pad save. The Bruins outshot Carolina 12-4 in the second and owned a 26-10 edge through two periods. Charas power-play goal had tied the game 1-1 late in the opening period. With the Hurricanes Manny Malhotra in the box with a double minor for high sticking, Chara collected the rebound of Milan Lucics shot in front and slipped a shot into a wide-open right side of the net. Carolina grabbed a 1-0 lead on Sekeras power-play goal just under 6 minutes into the game. Only a few minutes after Sekera had to be helped off favouring his right leg after blocking a shot, the defenceman sent a shot from the middle of the blue line. Johnson was screened and the puck slipped past him inside the left post. "I just didnt see it," Johnson said. "I just didnt move my head quick enough."
